Self Edit Studio
Get your document ready for the final edit.
Upload your Word document and it comes back with a comment on the exact words to change, the way I mark a paper. You work through the comments, upload again, and see what is left.
This is a formatting tool, not a writing tool. It points out what is incorrect in your document and guides you through how to fix it, right in your Word file. It does not write, rewrite, or improve your content.
It helps you along. It does not replace the final edit. Self Edit Studio walks you through your own formatting, citations, and references, step by step, so the document you hand over is in much better shape. Your words are never changed, and nobody writes anything for you.
What you can check
One tool for every kind of paper you are writing.
Pick what you are working on, and the checks fit it.
Class assignment
Formatting and citation help for a paper in a course. No school template is needed.
Journal article
Citations, references, and APA 7 format for the article you are getting ready to submit.
Capstone
The proposal and the final, with your chapters and your school template.
Dissertation, all chapters
The proposal (chapters one through three) and the full dissertation, front pages to the end.
Everything it looks for
Every comment sits on the exact words to change, with the step to fix it.
Citations and references
- A citation that is not on your reference list
- A reference that is never cited in the text
- A citation that fits more than one reference, with what to add so it fits only one
- A citation missing a date
- Citations in one set of parentheses out of order
- A citation written the wrong way, and strings of citations
- Et al. used the APA 7 way
- A statement that needs a citation
- DOIs that are missing or not in the https://doi.org format
- Reference format, and italics where a reference needs them
APA 7 format
- Headings and heading levels, and title case in headings
- Page numbers and the footer
- Spacing and paragraph indents
- Font, size, and color, and bold text that should not be bold
- Justified text
- Lists typed by hand, and their indents and spacing
- Block quotes, short quotes, and quotes missing a page number or participant ID
- Unpaired quotation marks
- Abstract keywords
- Participant names, so you check they are not real names
Sentences and wording
- Spelling and grammar
- Incomplete sentences and run-on sentences
- Missing periods and stray punctuation
- Repeated passages
- Places you marked to complete later
- Wording that is used the wrong way, such as “in regards to” when it should be “in regard to”
Your school template
- Your document checked against your school or journal template
- Margins and page setup
- Front pages
- Table of contents, list of tables, and list of figures
- Grand Canyon University students can pick their template version. Everyone else adds their own template.
Long and short paragraphs
- Paragraphs that run too long, so you can split them
- Paragraphs that are too short, so you can build them out
Tense and alignment
- Tense: future for a proposal, past for a final
- Anthropomorphism, such as a study that “believes” something
- Alignment between your chapters one and three
Tables, figures, and appendices are not checked. This tool looks at your format, your chapters, your citations, and your references.
What it is, and what it is not
A formatting tool that guides you to the final edit. It does not replace it.
Use it as many times as you like while you write. Each time you upload again, you see what is left, and what you fixed. When the document is as clean as you can get it, that is when the final edit does its best work.
It is not a writing tool. It checks your format, and for each thing it finds, it shows you what is incorrect and the steps to fix it. It does not comment on your ideas, your argument, or how well you wrote. That is coaching. It never rewrites a sentence and it never guesses at a missing source. I do not ghostwrite, and nothing here will do that either.
A long paper is marked in batches of 500 comments, so your document opens without trouble. Fix those, upload again, and the next ones are marked. The report at the top always counts everything.
